Overview: Serengeti Plain, p. 102

Legendary for its vast herds of wildlife, this grassy steppe is one of the world's natural treasures. Together with the nearby Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Maasai Mara Game Reserve across the border in Kenya, there is protection for the greatest and most varied collection of terrestrial wildlife on earth. This is one of the last great migratory systems still intact. During the rainy season between December and June, as many as two million wildebeests and zebras graze on the new growth of grass on these plains. When the rains stop in July the world's largest mammal migration occurs as the animals move west toward Lake Victoria in search of new pastures.
