Overview: Bangkok, Thailand, p. 132

Bangkok is one of the world's most rapidly growing cities, with a population expanding in response to growing economic prosperity and migration from impoverished rural farming regions. This view shows the Royal Palace and Golden Temple, the seat of traditional religious and political power in the country. Without the cooperation of the King and Buddhist religious leaders, Mechai Viavaidya wouldn't have been so successful in his family planning and AIDS awareness programs. Zoom out and move around the city until you can get a sense of its size and density.

1
Zoom out and examine the city of Bangkok and surrounding region. What is the most likely annual natural hazard the city faces?
A)Earthquakes. Bangkok is located near a major tectonic plate boundary.
B)Landslides. The region around Bangkok is characterized by steep slopes.
C)Coastal flooding. Bangkok is located directly on the coast.
D)River flooding. Bangkok is built on the floodplain of a major river.
E)Wild fires. The countryside around Bangkok is prone to forest fire during the dry season.
2
Zoom out and move south approximately 20 km from the marker. The landscape here is broken into small rectangular agricultural fields. Examine the appearance and color of the fields and the roads between them. How does this region differ from agricultural landscapes in the United States?
A)Thai farmers have little need for fences due to the unusual topography of the land.
B)Many fields appear to be flooded and the roads between them are raised.
C)The farms are much less crowded in Thailand, with more expansive plots.
D)Thai farmers appear to be growing more drought-tolerant crops because it is a dry, arid region.
E)The fields are laid out along a carefully ordered grid.
3
What is likely to be a primary crop in this area?
A)Corn
B)Potatoes
C)Walnuts
D)Rice
E)Hops
4
Which of the following factors make Bangkok a place that is likely to have a strong family planning program?
A)The city and country are growing fast and desperately needs to reduce its population growth rate.
B)Thailand has changed abruptly from a mainly-rural, agrarian society where large families were needed, to a largely-urban, increasingly wealthy society where small families are more appropriate.
C)Bangkok has a largely-young, educated urban population that can be receptive to frank information about family planning.
D)All of the factors listed encourage a strong family planning program.
E)None of the factors listed impact the family planning program in Thailand.
