Upon completing this chapter, you will be able to:

1. Identify and place in proper sequence five of the major inventions in the history of computing;

2. Discuss succinctly the contributions of each of the following individuals to the field of computing:

  1. Charles Babbage,
  2. Herman Hollerith,
  3. Howard Aiken,
  4. John Atanasoff,
  5. John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert, and,
  6. John Von Neumann;

3. Differentiate among the generations of computers according to their technological advances; and

4. Be able to list three ways the computer has changed education.
