Birth and the Newborn Baby

Chapter Overview

Chapter 5 begins with the drama of birth: the climax of fetal development and the curtain raiser on child development in the world outside the womb. In this chapter, the authors:
  • Describe what happens during the four stages of childbirth
  • Discuss the pros and cons of various methods of, and alternative settings for, childbirth
  • Describe the physical characteristics of a newborn baby and the changes in functioning that occur after the cutting of the umbilical cord
  • Discuss potential complications of childbirth, including low birthweight, postmaturity, and stillbirth
  • Tell how electronic fetal monitoring, the Agar scale, the Brazelton scale, and other screening instruments are used to check health and functioning during birth and the neonatal period
  • Discuss whether there is a critical time for bonding between infants and parents
  • Describe the typical alternation of newborns' states of arousal and how they change during infancy
  • Discuss how the transition to parenthood affects marriage and family life
