Critical Reading/Annotating

Annotating means marking the text. Some methods of annotation include:

  • making notes about content
  • using symbols (question marks, exclamation points)
  • recording personal reactions

Annotation does not simply mean underlining or highlighting, for these often do not help you understand a text. If you do underline or highlight, remind yourself of why the passage was important with a note in the margin. The best way to learn is to restate ideas in your own words.
