Critical Reading/Annotating: Try It Yourself

Annotate the essay that you have been assigned. You may wish to consider the following possibilities as you prepare to annotate.

  • Look for vocabulary words that you don't understand and mark them.
  • Find any ideas or statements that puzzle you or strike you as incorrect. Make a note about your problem(s) with these.
  • Note language that strikes you (as powerful, weak, convincing, etc.).
  • Note ideas, statements, images that help you connect with the text.
