Consider the concept of acculturation, as described by Larsen and Buss in Chapter 17. Do you believe there to be some cultural differences to which one may not be able to adapt? Which ones, and why? Also, given America's incredible diversity, are there certain, stable cultural values unique to America that you believe every American has or should have? If so, describe and evaluate how--and by what means--these American values may be evoked and transmitted; if not, imagine what American culture may look like to others from outside of America--how do you think other people from other countries view our culture? Try to be as specific as possible in your responses.

Let us take up the debate introduced toward the end of Chapter 17, which is concerned with emotional expression and language. For the purposes of this debate, let us focus on the polar positions, with one side arguing that language actually creates thought and experience, and the other side contending that language is only a means--or a mere technology--of expression. Now, in an essay, choose a side and defend it. Which side do you believe and why? Or, if you believe strongly that there is a middle ground, what might it be--how might it be defined? Use any personal experiences you may have, including your knowledge of other languages and cultures, along with examples from your textbook to support your reasoning.
