In Chapter 19, Larsen and Buss introduce several ways of categorizing personality disorders; in fact, in order to offer an organized approach to this topic, they even provide building blocks for, and clusters of, personality disorders, above and beyond the DSM-IV. Why do you think the seemingly straight-forward concept of disorder warrants such rigorous classification--so many levels of analysis, categories, dimensions, etc.? Do you believe there might be disadvantages to focusing on the classification of personality disorders? Why or why not? In your essay, take into account the history of psychopathology and the various definitions of words such as "abnormal," as provided in your textbook; also, consider what social goals psychopathology may promote--i.e., are there reasons why a society may need to develop ways to define what is normal and what is abnormal? As always, remember to give specific examples to support your reasoning.

Select a personality disorder discussed in Chapter 19; then, drawing upon what you have learned so far in this course, write an essay in which you describe how you would go about testing for this specific personality disorder. What behavior(s) might you test for? What method(s) would you use? Remember to provide for a differential diagnosis, in case your research happens to produce evidence that could support two or more diagnosis.
