Deadline Dilemma

Maria Lourdes works as an administrative assistant at Centennial Travel Agency. One of her responsibilities is to revise, edit, and format a monthly newsletter that is sent to all business customers. Andrea Jeager, a travel agent, writes the draft of the newsletter and then submits the draft to Marina.

Andrea was busy and submitted her newsletter to Marina without checking it. Because the newsletter was also late, Marina had only one day to work on her revision.

Marina found several inconsistencies in punctuation. She also noticed that Andrea used both figures and words for the same types of numbers.

Marina is working on a tight deadline. Should she format the newsletter first and then check the content for errors?

What resources could Marina use to help her check the use of punctuation and numbers?

What should Marina do to make sure that the newsletter is ready in a timely manner?
A)Marina should only take the time to correct the most grievous punctuation errors and ignore the inconsistent use of number format—the readers will understand those anyway.
B)Marina should focus on the content of the newsletter because the message is more important than the appearance.
C)Marina should focus on the formatting of the newsletter because she doesn’t have time to look up the correct punctuation.
D)Marina should establish an earlier submission deadline for Andrea’s draft so that she can have time to work both on the form and content of the newsletter.
