Unit 8: Sentence Combining

Overview

Sentence combining is a skill used during the revision phase of the writing process. It enables you to choose how you will phrase your thoughts, thereby helping you develop a writing style that is unique to you. To combine sentences, you can delete repeated words, add connecting words, rearrange words, and change the form of words.

Some strategies and skills help when you combine sentences. For example, you should vary the length and structure of your sentences. Then read your sentences aloud and compare your style to the style of other writers. Remember to use sentence-combining techniques when you revise your documents.
