Application is the skill of transferring the understanding of a concept or passage to a different situation.

Making Applications

(See pages 39–41)

Making applications requires two steps:

  • understanding the main idea and supporting details of a passage
  • applying this understanding to a new context or setting
The following are steps for recognizing and responding to application questions:
  • Respond to the question, not to the passage.
  • The question gives you the new idea, the new information, and the new situation.
  • Transfer your understanding of the passage to the new context.
