HERBERGER THEATER CENTER AND CENTER DANCE ENSEMBLE ANNOUNCE A MODERN DANCE WORKSHOP WITH MASTER TEACHER—ETHEL BUTLER

Master Teacher, Ethel Butler, will be holding a modern dance workshop in conjunction with Center Dance Ensemble. Frances Smith Cohen, Artistic Director of Center Dance Ensemble, is pleased to be hosting this workshop with this legendary dancer/teacher.
Ms. Butler began her dance career with Martha Graham in New York City in 1932 and was the only acknowledged teacher for the Graham company for the first 8 years of its existence. From 1932 to 1944 Ms. Butler danced in such classics as Primitive Mysteries 1932, Celebration 1934 and Letter to the World 1940.
Her students included Yuriko, Paul Taylor, Ethel Winter and Merce Cunningham. In 1944 she relocated in Washington, D.C., where she became a leading force in modern dance for the next thirty years. She directed the Ethel Butler Dance Company, established the only professional dance studio in Washington and taught choreography and technique at Howard University.
Retiring her studio in 1972, Ms. Butler became a choreographer consultant and master teacher at the University of Maryland where she continues to teach advanced technique classes and teaches master workshops around the country.
Ms. Cohen said: "This is our way to open up our first full year of existence. We're excited and pleased to have a person of this caliber come in and work with our students."
The workshop runs from August 21–August 25 between the hours of 9:30 AM-11:00AM in the Herberger Theater Center Rehearsal Room. The fee for 5 classes is $40.00 or $10.00 for each individual class. The workshop is for intermediate and advanced dancers. For complete workshop information please call: Frances Smith Cohen at 996-9027.
