Use the following information to write a news release for immediate release.
What: Maricopa County, the largest county in Arizona, which takes in the metropolitan Phoenix area, is holding a special bond election on May 6.
Hours: Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
Locations of Elections Central: The Supervisors Auditorium at the Maricopa County Complex, 205 W. Jefferson, Phoenix. Doors will open for media access at 6 p.m. on election day.
Elections Central: Central reporting station for updated election results with telephones, hook-ups, and private area available to the media. Elections Central will be open to the public. Any citizen interested in knowing election results and viewing the election process is invited.
First results: First election results will be available at 8:30 p.m. Election results will be displayed on a tally screen as they are received and will be updated by the Elections Department staff every 15 minutes beginning at 8:30 p.m.
Number of eligible voters: 825,746.
Number of polling places: 1,093.
Number of official receiving stations: Eleven. Increased from four in the last general election for the metro Phoenix area, in a continuing effort by the Elections Department to expedite the dissemination of election results.
Vote count procedure: Punch card voting system with tabulation at Maricopa County Complex, Department of Computer Services.
Official prediction of voter turnout: County Recorder Keith Poletis is forecasting that 9.7%, or 80,097, of the county's registered voters will cast ballots. This represents 6% of the county's voting age population.
Quotations from Poletis: "There is every indication that we are due for a disappointing voter turnout on May 6. I hope that I am wrong. I hope that my
prediction doesn't come true, but the numbers are pointing to a low turnout in this election.
"The projected low voter turnout indicates, at a minimum, that election law reform is essential to facilitate and encourage voting. All governments must do more to ensure greater voter participation."
Maricopa County recorder: The Maricopa County recorder is the official registrar of voters and supervises the county's Elections Department, which is responsible for all federal, state and county elections in Maricopa County.
Summary of campaign issue: Voters are being asked to approve the sale of $261 million in Maricopa County general obligation bonds to provide revenue for capital improvements.
Finance: This election is being paid for by Maricopa County at a cost of $899,000.
Last countywide election: Special Transportation issue held in October. That election saw a record high turnout for a special election with 34% of the registered voters casting ballots.
