Exercise 8.8

Use the following information, which is from a story in The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, to write a direct-address lead.
This story is a travel piece about Costa Rica, the Central American country south of Nicaragua and north of Panama.
Costa Rica contains flora and fauna characteristic of both North and South America. It has 12,000 varieties of plants, 237 species of mammals, 848 kinds of birds and 361 types of amphibians and reptiles.
The country is about the size of West Virginia.
Much of the plant and animal life is protected by the Costa Rican national park system.
There is a lot to do in Costa Rica:
  • Swim with angel fish and sunbathe with iguanas.
  • Look down on the clouds or up at a troop of monkeys.
  • Look out at a flock of bright green parrots.
  • Enjoy the air-conditioned deluxe accommodations.
  • Visit parks that have admission costs of generally less than 50 cents per person.
  • Tour beaches, mountains or both.
  • Tour the Paos volcano, which is 9,000 feet above sea level and is an active volcano, accessible by a good road.
Costa Rica is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Caribbean Sea on the east. It is divided by four mountain ranges.
San José is the country's capital. It is the largest city in Costa Rica and is home to the country's largest airport.
