Thinking Critically
(See related pages)

A friend of yours gardens for a hobby. He or she noticed that they have a plant that no longer produces the same color of flower that it did a few years ago. It used to produce red flowers and now it produces white flowers. Consider that petal color in plants is due to an enzyme. No color suggests no enzyme activity. Using what you know about genes, protein synthesis and mutations, hypothesize what may have happened to cause the change in flower color. Identify several possibilities, then identify what you would need to know to test your hypothesis.

You will want to consider the life-cycle of the plant. Does it live from year-to-year or does it reseed and grow each from new plants. Your answer may be different in each situation. What are implications if each year new plants grow from seed?
