Exercise 1

Goal: This activity is designed to help students practice writing transitions in order to help reinforce how important they are in guiding the listener along during the speech.

Instructions: Your task is to read Sting's 1994 commencement address to the graduating class of the Berklee School of Music <www.berklee.edu/html/ab_sting.html>. After you read his speech, rewrite the transitions to make the speech have a better overall flow to it and help it to be more organized. Be prepared to discuss and defend your changes with the rest of the class.

Exercise 2

Goal: This activity is designed to help students become better at distinguishing what elements make up a persuasive speech.

Instructions: Your task is to read Hillary Clinton's address to the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women <http://gos.sbc.edu/c/clinton.html>, and decide whether or not this is an example of a persuasive speech. What types of appeals does she use? What is the format of the speech? Is the evidence she uses to support her claims persuasive? How well does she appear to relate to the audience?
