Purpose and Audience

In August 1977 in Palo Alto, California, Debbi Fields, a young mother with no business experience opened her first cookie store. Today, the company has over 650 domestic locations, and over 65 international locations in 11 different countries. See http://www.mrsfields.com/about/ for the history of the company.

Debbi Fields does speak publicly about her story. Just recently, she was quoted in Career World Magazine, as saying: "The important thing is not being afraid to take a chance. Remember, the greatest failure is to not try. Once you find something you love to do, be the best at doing it."

You have requested that Debbi come speak about owning a franchise to your communication class. You need to give her an audience profile of your class. Include two paragraphs describing the audience.

What special areas would you want Debbi to speak on, given the interests of your audience?

1

If Debbi's target audience is going to be a group of 40 college students with an interest in communications, what would be the best way to address them?
A)Since Debbi is addressing college students who are used to reading lots of printed materials, it would be best if Debbi were to prepare an agenda and then prepare handouts to distribute.
B)Debbi should rely on colorful graphics and other visual aids to enhance her speech and make it more interesting for college students.
C)Debbi should prepare a formal speech and print it on note cards. She should deliver her speech standing behind a podium while using a pointer to indicate important facts and figures on the chart she's brought.
D)It would be best for Debbi to take an open and enthusiastic approach: She should prepare a speech about the pitfalls of starting a new business, distribute a handout with some tips and business advice, and then open the floor to questions.
