A neighbor of a house on Lawler Avenue in Skokie reported a fire just after 7 p.m.
By the time firefighters arrived, flames were shooting out of the windows on the south side of a one-story brick house. The fire was in a bedroom.
Firefighters forced their way into the home because there was no one at home. The owner

returned later, when department investigators were on the scene.
Investigators said the fire was caused by a cigarette that apparently was left smoldering on a mattress and pillow.
Skokie Fire Department officials said the fire caused an estimated $50,000 damage. It occurred on Friday night.
